This was Thomas Dolby's first major album. It is also the most well known due to the MTV video play of the video She Blinded Me With Science. Interestingly, this song was not included on the original release of the album. As you can see from the many listings for the album, it underwent several variations as the record company tried to figure out how to market Thomas. Prior to this album, Thomas had released a single with the songs Urges and Leipzig. These songs made it onto the original version of the album. Later due to the success of the videos and the Blinded By Science EP, the songs were replaced by She Blinded Me with Science and Europa and the Pirate Twins. The new songs became Thomas' highest charting songs of his career so far. Before the songs were switched out, Thomas also rerecorded the song Radio Silence with a more "synthy" version. All of these different variations of song listings and at least 2-3 different covers makes this very difficult to trace the exact history of the album. If you are trying to find the versions with the different Radio Silence, there seems to only be one difference which is the track time of the song. The rock version has a track time of 4:32 whereas the synth version has a track time of 3:43. Both records come on the same label and catalog number. The CD version only has the synth version. As far as I know the non-synthy version has never been released on CD. | |
